My personal favorite?
Calvin & Hobbes
Timothy Morgan, EXCO-404
Modern cartoonists consider Calvin and Hobbes to be incredibly influential and any fan will attest to its quality and relatobility [sic]. But what makes it such a great strip? This class will explore the question, looking to the singular personality of its author, Bill Watterson, and to its wealth of themes and ideas. Fan and non-fans equally welcome.
The list includes UCLA’s course in The Beatles, but I think we all know IU’s course in the music of The Beatles is the greatest out there and really quite serious.
We all know that EXCO doesn’t count. I took an EXCO on foam weapon combat and another where we compared the relative merits of Hamms vs. Pabst. (Hamms won, kids.) Besides, you can only get half a credit for most of them.
My friend Brittany now teaches Calvin and Hobbes <3. They probably should have listed the Buffy the Vampire Slayer ExCo I took last year. Or the Superheroes class I’m taking now.
